LE GRAND — Callyn Curphy homered twice to reach double digits for the year and Morgan Neuroth struck out 16, helping the Class 2A No. 11 East Marshall softball team defeat Montezuma 8-1 in Wednesday’s regular-season finale.

Curphy hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning and another in the third. She added a double to finish the night 3-for-3 with four RBIs.

Bailey Grant connected for her first round-tripper of the season, a two-run shot two batters after Curphy’s second homer, as East Marshall improved to 23-7 heading into the playoffs.

Neuroth allowed only four singles and one walk in the win, retiring Montezuma batters on strikes for 16 of the 21 outs. Jadyn Sharer had two hits for the Braves (9-16) and scored their only run in the top of the sixth.

Rayne McIlrath finished 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and run scored, and Kennedy Wheater was 2-for-3 and scored a run. Neuroth, Emma Pfantz and Catelyn Fisher each hit a single.

East Marshall receives a first-round bye in 2A Region 6 play and will face either Hudson or Wapsie Valley on July 6 in Le Grand.

BCLUW baseball edged out by Clarksville

CLARKSVILLE — Clarksville used an eight-run fourth inning to rally past the BCLUW baseball team on its way to a 14-13 victory in Wednesday’s regular-season finale.

The Indians (2-13) trailed 7-2 through three innings before putting up eight runs in the fourth. BCLUW (2-17) regained the lead with two runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth, but Clarksville overcame the 13-10 deficit with four runs of its own in the home half of the sixth.

The two pitching staffs walked a combined 23 batters in the battle between current and future Iowa Star Conference teams.

Walker Ashton led the BCLUW bats with four singles as well as four stolen bases. Cael Keller hit three doubles, while Hayden Schleisman had two singles and a double. Logan Scafferi had two singles, while Nick Feldpausch, Ryan Busch and Cayden McLeland each contributed a single.

Owen Myers pitched two innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit and one walk with three strikeouts.

The Comets begin postseason play on Saturday in Reinbeck, facing fifth-ranked Don Bosco at 7 p.m. in their Class 1A District 7 opener.
