Spartan Wrestlng Club is hosting the inaugural Music City Beach Bash on June 4 at Hyden Beach, a volleyball facility in Spring Hill.

“We think it can be something that’s really cool,” said Pete Miller, who coaches in the SWC program as well as at Summit High Schoo. “We think when you involve ‘beach’ and ‘wrestling’, it can be cool. It could be something huge and fun and different.”

Beach wrestling is a fast-paced sport and is sanctioned by USA Wrestling (all participants are required to have USAW cards). Matches are three minutes long, with the first wrestler to score three points winning. Takedowns are worth a point; forcing an opponent out of the “ring” is worth a point; and taking an opponent directly to their back is worth three points.

“It’s a little different atmosphere than people are used to,” tournament director Michael Hatcher said. “I think they’ll enjoy it.”

Wrestling begins at 12 noon, and cornhole boards will be available for down time between matches.

“It’s really intriguing to me,” said Kortney Dalrymple, director and general manager of Hyden Beach. “I’d think you could just throw sand in the face of the person you’re wrestling and win. I’m goind to be there just for the interest and to see what it looks like.

“We’ve gotten a couple of phone calls, a couple of e-mails about it. I know there’s some interest.”

Male and female participants will be placed in 8U/10U, 12U/14U, 16U, Junior (high school grades 9-12) or Senior (born in or before 2004) age groups. All registrants will receive a gift bag. Winners will be presented custom fight shorts, with second- and third-place finishers in each bracket receiving medals.

Registration, exclusively at trackwrestling.com, closes at 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 2.

Hyden Beach is located at 5191 Joe Peay Road in Spring Hill.
