ACKLEY — Morgan Neuroth pitched a one-hitter and the East Marshall softball team stomped AGWSR 9-1 in Thursday’s season-opening NICL West Division clash.

Neuroth struck out 13 and did not walk a batter, allowing one unearned run to AGWSR in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Mustangs led 6-1 by that point.

Neuroth and Kennedy Wheater each had three of East Marshall’s 15 hits against AGWSR pitcher Sidney Schafer. Neuroth was 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored, while Wheater went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Callyn Curphy, Bailey Grant, Catelyn Fisher and Camy Weeks each contributed two hits for East Marshall, including a double for Fisher. Weeks drove in two runs.

Tori Metzgar spoiled Neuroth’s no-hit bid with a leadoff single in the sixth.

Wolverines pummel North Tama, improve to 2-0

TRAER — The GMG softball team pounded out a 13-0, three-inning win over North Tama in Thursday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division showdown.

The visiting Wolverines (2-0, 2-0) had 10 hits, led by two apiece for Lily Harris and Olivia Maddux. Winning pitcher Abby Parks singled and scored all three times she came to the plate for GMG. Parks struck out one, walked two and hit two batters but surrendered no hits to North Tama (0-1, 0-1).

Eighth-grader Addison Hochstetler took the loss for the Redhawks, allowing nine earned runs on three walks and one hit batsman. She struck out three.

Comets surrender walk-off homer to South Hardin

CONRAD — Playing as the road team on its home diamond, the BCLUW softball squad surrendered a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 11th inning as South Hardin edged the Comets 6-5 in Thursday’s NICL West Division contest.

Hailey Rosonke’s second solo home run of the game led off the home half of the 11th and gave South Hardin (2-0, 1-0) the victory.

Katie Hill took the loss in the circle for the Comets (1-1, 0-1), allowing three earned runs on six hits and 10 walks in 10 innings pitched. She struck out 11.

Kaylee Grant finished 3-for-5 at the plate, stealing five bases and scoring three runs for BCLUW. Callie Swanson was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, while Hill and Maliah Gunderson both went 2-for-5. Gunderson drove in two runs with a fourth-inning single.

Trojans fall to Tigers in ranked showdown, 1-0

GRINNELL — Brady Steward twirled a two-hit shutout and drove in the game-inning run with a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead Class 3A preseason No. 5 Grinnell to a 1-0 victory over 2A No. 6 West Marshall on Thursday night.

Trojan left-hander Owen Siegert spun a one-hitter but walked consecutive batters to start the bottom of the seventh. After a force-out at third, Siegert hit a batter to load the bases before Steward delivered the game-winning RBI for the host Tigers.

Siegert struck out 13 in the complete-game loss.

Caden Pfantz and Kinnick Christensen had West Marshall’s only hits against Steward.

East Marshall bats clipped by Cougars

ACKLEY — Bo Gerbracht allowed only one hit over five innings and the AGWSR baseball team beat East Marshall 3-1 in Thursday’s NICL West Division battle.

Carter Anderson was the hard-luck loser on the mound for East Marshall, alllowing three unearned runs on four hits over five innings. He walked one and struck out 10. Connor Hassin pitched two scoreless innings of relief, walking two and striking out two.

AGWSR (2-1, 1-0) scored its three runs in the bottom of the first, and East Marshall (0-3, 0-1) countered with its lone tally in the top of the second. Connor Kriegel singled and later scored from third base on an errant pickoff throw.
